Problem

Evaluating Rafay Alternatives for GPU Infrastructure

In our analysis, a management layer can only offer the isolation that the runtime underneath it supports.

Tenant Boundaries Need Explicit Evaluation

Compare control-plane separation and dedicated worker ownership in the evaluated configuration, rather than inferring all capabilities from an embedded runtime.

Machine Provisioning Needs Clear Ownership

GPU service delivery needs machine lifecycle automation, driver integration and network configuration, with clear responsibilities for every step.

Platform Scope Needs Clear Evaluation

Assess tenant provisioning, worker allocation and fleet operations against your actual service requirements using current product documentation.

Solution

vCluster Platform: the Runtime Plus the Enterprise Layer

vCluster combines tenant control-plane separation, dedicated Private Nodes and fleet operations. vMetal orchestrates machine provisioning, while supported node providers connect tenant capacity to your infrastructure. vCluster Labs serves 50+ GPU clouds & Fortune 500s.

Built for Isolation at GPU Cloud Scale

Five capabilities GPU cloud teams look at when comparing vCluster Platform with a management layer built on the open-source runtime.

Tenant Isolation

Isolated Control Planes per Tenant

Each tenant has an independent Kubernetes API, data store and RBAC boundary. Lightweight control-plane hosting reduces dedicated server requirements for tenant infrastructure evaluation; Private Nodes keep production workers tenant-specific.

  • Independent tenant API and data store
  • Tenant-scoped scheduling on Private Nodes
  • No dedicated control-plane servers per tenant
Workload Security

Kernel-Level Workload Isolation

vNode uses Linux user namespaces and seccomp to restrict workload privileges and system calls. It adds runtime hardening for tenant infrastructure evaluation without a guest kernel or hypervisor, complementing dedicated workers rather than allocating GPUs.

  • Linux user namespaces and seccomp
  • No guest kernel or hypervisor
  • Helps limit workload breakout
Worker Isolation

Dedicated Worker Nodes per Tenant

Private Nodes dedicate worker capacity to one tenant cluster, with its own CNI and storage configuration. For tenant infrastructure evaluation, select physical servers or VMs according to the required infrastructure boundary.

  • Dedicated worker nodes per tenant
  • Tenant-owned CNI and storage configuration
  • Physical servers or supported VMs
Platform Operations

Central Fleet Management at Scale

Coordinate tenant environments for tenant infrastructure evaluation through one UI, CLI and API. Templates, access policies and quotas provide central operator controls while tenant Kubernetes APIs and dedicated production workers remain separate.

  • Unified UI, CLI, and API
  • SSO, quotas, and templates
  • RBAC across full fleet
Standards Compliance

CNCF-Certified Kubernetes per Tenant

Every tenant cluster is a conformant, CNCF-certified Kubernetes control plane rather than a proprietary partition. Tenants work with standard Kubernetes APIs and get cluster-admin rights without affecting their neighbors.

  • Standard Kubernetes APIs
  • Cluster-admin per tenant
  • Not a proprietary partition

FAQs

What should teams evaluate in a Rafay Kubernetes alternative?

Evaluate vCluster against the service you need to deliver: separate tenant Kubernetes APIs, dedicated production workers and infrastructure lifecycle operations. Private Nodes provide the recommended customer worker model, while vMetal orchestrates machines and Platform coordinates templates and access. Compare documented versions and configurations directly; an embedded runtime alone does not describe every capability of another vendor's platform.

Does vCluster support GPU workloads and AI infrastructure?

vCluster Labs software powers 100K+ GPUs and 1M+ CPUs, serving 50+ GPU clouds & Fortune 500s combined. In production, Lintasarta operates 170+ tenant clusters, while Boost Run completed its managed Kubernetes launch in under 45 days from the decision. These named deployments provide scale and launch examples for teams evaluating the platform for their own infrastructure.

Is vCluster's tenant isolation stronger than namespace isolation?

Namespaces divide resources within a Kubernetes cluster, but share its API and cluster-wide administrative scope. RBAC, quotas and network policies remain useful controls. vCluster adds a separate tenant API and data store, with Private Nodes dedicating production workers. This reduces dependencies between tenant environments while platform administrators still manage the underlying infrastructure and its failure domains.

How quickly can a team migrate from Rafay to vCluster?

Standard Kubernetes APIs support familiar deployment tools, but migration still requires validation of storage, networking, identity, GPU drivers and runtime-dependent operators. Create a tenant cluster with the required Private Nodes configuration, test representative workloads, and plan data movement and rollback before switching traffic. Boost Run's launch timeline is not a migration estimate for your existing environment.

How does vCluster handle dedicated GPU nodes per tenant?

Private Nodes are worker nodes joined to one tenant cluster, with that tenant's own CNI and storage configuration. They can be physical machines or supported VMs. Use dedicated bare metal when the service requires exclusive physical servers. vMetal can provision the underlying machines, while platform policies define which capacity a tenant may request and how it is released.

Is vCluster open source?

The vCluster core is open source under Apache 2.0. vCluster Platform provides additional management and infrastructure capabilities through free and paid offerings. Private Nodes are available in Platform Free, so they should not be described as a paid-only isolation feature. Check the current feature matrix for the release and plan you deploy, including air-gapped, FIPS and advanced operational requirements.
